AUV vs. Underwater Drone

How technical AUV terminology differs from the broader consumer phrase “underwater drone.”

Core concept

“Underwater drone” is an umbrella marketing term. It may describe a small tethered camera ROV, an autonomous vehicle or a remotely supervised hybrid. AUV is more specific: the vehicle can execute a submerged mission without continuous piloting.

What engineers and buyers should verify

For procurement, the label matters less than the architecture. Ask about tethering, energy, navigation drift, depth rating, payload interfaces, recovery method and what happens after a fault.

Reading specifications responsibly

Configuration, payload, speed and mission conditions matter. AUVS preserves the manufacturer’s published language, marks unavailable values as “Not published,” and links every vehicle record to provenance.
