Core concept
Before launch, operators define geography, depth or altitude constraints, sensor settings, safety behaviors and recovery points. The vehicle then closes its own control loops: depth sensors and inertial instruments estimate state, actuators correct course, and mission software advances through waypoints or behaviors.
What engineers and buyers should verify
Underwater navigation is usually dead-reckoned because satellite navigation does not penetrate seawater. DVL measurements, inertial navigation, depth, terrain matching and occasional acoustic fixes constrain drift. At the surface, GNSS can update position and radio or satellite links can exchange mission data.
Reading specifications responsibly
Configuration, payload, speed and mission conditions matter. AUVS preserves the manufacturer’s published language, marks unavailable values as “Not published,” and links every vehicle record to provenance.
