AUVS technical guide
AUVs for Search and Recovery
Planning broad-area searches, detecting targets and converting sonar contacts into evidence.
Core concept
AUVs can cover programmed grids with side-scan, SAS, multibeam, magnetometers or cameras. Deep-rated systems reduce the tow-body positioning and cable challenges of abyssal search.
What engineers and buyers should verify
Search probability depends on target characteristics, terrain, altitude, sensor geometry and navigation. A detected contact normally requires classification and sometimes a separate optical or ROV investigation.
Reading specifications responsibly
Configuration, payload, speed and mission conditions matter. AUVS preserves the manufacturer’s published language, marks unavailable values as “Not published,” and links every vehicle record to provenance.
