AUVS technical guide
AUV Sonar and Mapping
Side-scan, synthetic-aperture, multibeam and sub-bottom sensing from autonomous platforms.
Core concept
Side-scan sonar emphasizes seabed reflectivity and object imagery. Multibeam echosounders measure bathymetry across a swath. Synthetic-aperture sonar combines successive pings to obtain fine along-track resolution, while sub-bottom profilers examine shallow sediment layers.
What engineers and buyers should verify
Altitude, speed, water properties and navigation quality affect usable coverage. A quoted swath is not automatically the same as mapped area per hour, and image resolution is not equivalent to positional accuracy.
Reading specifications responsibly
Configuration, payload, speed and mission conditions matter. AUVS preserves the manufacturer’s published language, marks unavailable values as “Not published,” and links every vehicle record to provenance.
