AUVS technical guide
Under-Ice Exploration
Why autonomy, navigation and recovery become especially demanding beneath sea ice and ice shelves.
Core concept
An AUV cannot rely on routine surfacing for GNSS or satellite contact beneath ice. Mission plans therefore emphasize inertial and terrain-aided navigation, acoustic tracking where geometry permits, obstacle clearance and conservative energy reserves.
What engineers and buyers should verify
Recovery planning is central: ice drift, limited access holes and uncertain acoustic conditions can dominate the engineering problem. Published deployments should not be generalized beyond their documented configuration.
Reading specifications responsibly
Configuration, payload, speed and mission conditions matter. AUVS preserves the manufacturer’s published language, marks unavailable values as “Not published,” and links every vehicle record to provenance.
