What Is an AUV?

An autonomous underwater vehicle is an uncrewed submersible that executes a planned mission without a continuous control cable. It carries its own energy, navigation computer, control surfaces or thrusters, and mission payload. The word autonomous describes mission execution—not independence from human planning, launch, recovery, maintenance or data review.

AUVs are strongest where repeatable coverage, close-to-bottom sensing or operation beyond a tether is valuable. Survey vehicles often follow parallel track lines; hovering vehicles can inspect structures; gliders trade speed for months of endurance.
